Auckland, September 18. Four railway carriages for the,line between Wellington and Napier have been constructed at the Newmarket shops, and are to be sent to Wellington tomorrow by fcbe Hinemoa. A native named Kohatu has been, killed by falling over a precipice at Slippery Creek, Tairua, Wellington, September 18. The immigration and emigration returns for August show arrivals to be 803 and departures 1035: The arrivals were— From New South Wales 371, Victoria 155, United Kingdom 196, other places 81. Departures—To Victoria 40, New South Wales 433* United Kingdom 94, other places 64; A syndicate, which includes several Wellington gentlemen, will leave for London m. about a fortnight, for the purpose of pacing upon the market a company with a proposed capital of £100,000 to work a marble deposit which exists at "Riwaka Hill m the Nelson district. The deposit, which is estimated to cover about 800 acres, is situated upon Government property, at present held under lease, and is about five miles from the seahoardl Sir James Hector states that the great value of the, marble lies m the high percentage of carbonate of lime which it contains, naitiely 96. An offer from : Australia to purchase £35,000 worth lias already been made to the syndicate. ,A solid bluff 800 ft high, composed entirely of marble, indicates the position of the deposit. No less than fourteen different rarieties of marble are known to exist, but the deposit consists principally of what is known as granulated statuary, the most; valuable m the market, and which is now to be obtained only at one place, m the world, namely, at Carrara, m Italy, and there only quarried with the greatest difficulty, and by the most primitive methods. ; '■'■■■
