To-day being the opening of the fishing season, Messrs Shury and Simpson made an early start, and within four hours time anded 13 fish, the largest of which was 21bs 4ozs. The bait used was whitebait phantoms, and the locale m the vicinity of the Ashburton bridge. A number of disciples of Izaak Walton! proceeded from Ashburton to the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers this morning, and are expected to return with good wallets, as the rivers arc m firstrate condition, and, Mr Shury informs us, full of small fish. The funeral of the late wife of Mr James Smith, butcher, of Alford Forest road, took place on Sunday afternoon, and the procession from the house to the cemetery was a ' very large one, about sixty crowded vehicles and forty horsemen following, this attendance showing the respect for, and sympathy with, the beroaved father and family. The service was impressively conducted at the grave by the Rev A. M. Beattie, M.A., and was witnessed by a large company, m addition to those m the procession, the interment taking place m the Presbyterian ground, the deceased having been a member of that denomination. The Ashburton electorate comprises the Ridings of Mount Somers, Rangitata, and Ashburton, and the County of Ashburton, and that portion of the Upper Ashburton Riding m the same County which is West of Winchmore road and South of the road running through the Kaiapoi Borough endowment to Section 6502, together with that portion of the Riding of Wakanui which is West of the road running South from the Town of Dromore, past the Newland and Seafield Post Offices to the sea, and that portion of the Temuka Riding of the County of Geraldine which is between the Rangitata and Orari rivers. This district includes also the Borough of Ashburton and the Town Districts of Tinwald and Hampstead. Geraldine comprises the whole of the County of Geraldine, excepting that portion of the Levels Riding, which is situate South of the Opihi river, East of Stonyer's road, South of the road running westerly from Section 14449, to the northern boundary of Section 13782, and South of the road running westerly from that Section past Sections 15095 and 15879 to Tycho road, and South of the northern boundary of the present Waimate Electoral District, from Tycho road to near Cave railway station, and excepting that portion of the Temuka Riding which is situate between the Rangitata, and Orari rivers, and South of the railway line, This district includes the Town Districts of Arowhenua, Temuka, and Geraldine.
