The Hutchison Charges.
[per press association.] Wellington, September 9. The defences m the Whitaker and Hutchison libel were filed yesterday The first plea is a traverse of allegation of publication ; the second raises the question whether the publication is within the Parliament Priveleges Act ; the third alleges the charges were made without malice ; the fourth that they were made for the public benefit; the ftfth and principal defence pleads justification on the ground of the allegations being true m substance and m fact. As for the personal charges, it is alleged that plaintiff and other two ministers were respectively liable to the Bank of New Zealand m large amounts, which they were unable to discharge if called up~>n to meet the same m t c ordinary courje of business. As to the public charges, it is alleged they were treated by Ministers as competent and ; proper for a Parliament to deal with.
