The "Newspaper Press Directory for 1890" states that there are now published m the United Kingdom 2234 newspapers, distributed as follows :—England—London, 478 ; provinces, 1290 ; Wales, 89; Scotland, 194 ; Ireland, 160 ; Isles, 23. Of these there are 144 daily papers published m England, 6 m Wales, 19 m Scotland, 15 m Ireland, 1 m British Isles. On reference to the first edition of this directory for the year 1846, we find that m that year there were published m the United Kingdom 551 journals ; of these 14 were issued daily—viz., 12 m England and 2in Ireland ; but m 1890 there are now established and circulated 2234 papers, of which no less than 185 are issued daily, showing that the press of the country has more than quadrupled during the last 44 years. The increase m daily papers has been still more remarkable ; the daily issues standing 185, against 14 m 1846, The magazines now m course of publication, including the quarterly reviews, number 1752, of which more, than 430 are of a decidedly religious character, representing the Church of England, Weslcyans, Methodists, Baptists, Independents, Roman Catholics, and other Christian communities. In New Zealand there are 46 daily, papers, 58 weekly, 22 monthly, 29 bi-weekly, 13 tri-weekly, 2 fortnightly. Total 170 papers.
