The lighting committee of the Borough Council, after considering proposals from the Gulcher Electric Lighting Company and the Gas Company resolved to recommend the acceptance of the latter, under which the number of street lamps will be almost doubled for a comparatively small extra payment. ; Wellington, August 18 Sir Wm. Fitzherbert, Speaker of the Legislative Council, received many congratulations on Saturday, the occasion I being the celebration of his 80th birthday. A criminal libel action is about to be instituted by Mr H. D. Bell, Crown Prosecutor m this city, against the "Otago Workman" newspaper, published and circulated m Dunedin, m respect of some strictures on himself contained m nn article of 26th July, relating to Judge Edwards' appointment. The following are the names of the crew who left Wellington m the barque Kentish Lass (now 56 days out from Hokianga to Sydney) when she sailed for Hokianga : —J. Johnston, master ; V. P. Pearson, mate ; E. Muirhend, boatswain ; A. Bliss, cook and steward ; J. Schuthe, J. W. Foster, A. Grant, Wm. Newman, Wm, Mackay, and W. SteAvart, seamen. It is unlikely that any changes were made during her stay m Hokianga, The vessel is insured for £1600, but her owners, Messrs Stewart and Co., sawmillers, Courtenay Place, Wellington, value her at £2400. The Wanaka, with the rfan Francisco mail, is expected between 4 and 6 this evening. The Monowai will be detained to take on the southern portion to Lyttelton, leaving shortly after the Wanaka's arrival. At a special meeting of the City Council this evening it was resolved by seven to four to increase the drainage loan by £5000, thus making it £165,000. Dukbwn, August 18. In the divorce case Collie v. Collie, the wife's petition for divorce on the ground of adultery and cruelty, Mr Justice Williams reserved his decision. Bespondent admitted the adultery, but disputed the charge of cruelty which, as alleged, was of a peculiar and inexpressible kind, so peculiar that counsel for respondent stated that he had been unable to discoyer a parallel case m the law books. Sir Robert Stout commented on the absurdity of the law under which a man could get a divorce for hjs wife's unfaithfulness, but the wife could get one only when she had proved cruelty as well, Mrs Alice Davis yesterday took a dose of strychnine by mistake, but no dangerous results are apprehended. She took a glass of milk m which strychnine had been put for killing Terrain. At the Police Court the charge against Susan Dreaver of assulting and wounding her daughter, was reduced to a common assault, to which defendant pleaded guilty and was convicted and discharged on her husband giving his bond for £10 for her good behaviour. John McCJuskey alias McCusker was committed for trial on a charge of attempted rape,
