Auckland, August 13. The Government have,, sent to the Hospital and Charitable ; Aid Board a claim from the Auckland Prison Gat© Brigade for £35 for the, maintenance of the six men recently sent away from Avondale Asylum. The board have resplved to disregard the claim. - Complaints have been received by the city, school committees of the irregular attendance of children at the schools. One headmaster has reported ..that the average daily absence from his school for the past year was 103, resulting m a loss. to the Board of Education of over £400* The native authorities of Karotanga I have sent a petition to the Governor of New Zealand asking for legislation to prevent the export of liquor from this colony to Rarotonga. It is stated that they also intend to appeal to, tlte Home Government on the subject. ■ Dtotedin, August 13. Messrs Beafcfcy and Mackenzie's ironmongery store at Nenthorn was destroyed by fire this morning. . Fortunately there was ho wind or the whole town might have gone, as there was no water available.
