The auction of leases of pastoral lands on Hakateramea was held to-day. 3764 acres of an Education reserve, liable to be sold at any time for £2 an acre, was disposed of m 21 years leases m eleven lots. The total of upsets was £195 3s 6d ; rents realised £340 19s. Eight small grazing runs, total area 210,600 acres, were sold. The total upsets for these were £1031 16s, and the total rents bid were £1399 15s. The remainder of the old Station Peak and Waimate runs were leased for a few months at upset rents.
Mr John Hanunan, of Dunedin, is petitioning Pmiiament for substantial compensation for suggesting the imposition of the primage duty ! The Public Petitions Committee consider Hanunan is not entitled to compensation, and a lot of other people think he should bo punished instead of rewarded for putting such a weapon as the primage duty 8 Jjan s of a hard-up Colonial Treasurer.
