The ordinary meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held List night. ; Present —Councillors Friedlander, Scaly, Flower, Keir, Scott and Cuthbertson. CHAIRMAN. The Mayor telegraphed from Christchurch to the €ilerk ihat he had missed the train, and in his absence Cr. Friedlander was elected Chain-nan, FINANCE. The Chairman stated that the debit balance at the Bank now stood at £1287 4s 2d, and the income from all sources since last meeting had been £214 Vs. CORRESPONDENCE. Several letters on minor subjects were read and disposed of, the Chairman remarking that owing to the small meeting, only a bare quorum, it would not be wise to undertake any heavy business, the more especially that members doubtless wanted to attend Christie-Murray's lecture. SPKCIAIi BESOLUTIONS. I On the question of confirming the Special renolutions adopted at last meeting in connection,with the reserve leases, Cr. Keir voted against, but withdrew his opposition after it had been shown to him by the Chairman that lie would not be acting inconsistently by voting for the onfivmation.
NOTICE OP MOTION. Cr. Keir obtained leave to adjourn his motion, to procure a supply of broken metal for the Borough. engineers' repout. The Engineers reported as follows :— The Labor Gang have been engaged in forming parts of Wills and Willlamstreets, ploughing for tree planting in the Domain, spreading shingle in Peter street, taking down and re-erecting fence in the Domain, putting in culvert in Winter's Road, repairing traffic bridge, and general maintenance work. MctalUvg. —The contractors commenced delivering shingle in Peter street last Tuesday. Domain Cottage. —The alterations and repairs to the caretaker's cottage in the Domain have been carried out, with the exception ol the painting. The report was adopted. TRAFFIC BRIDGE. Cr Scaly drew attention to the state of the bridge approaches, and the Engineer was instructed to interview the County Engineer on the subject. CROSSINGS. Cr Scaly also complained of the state of the street crossings in East street, and the Engineer was ordered to remedy the defects mentioned. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of about £120 were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
