Ashburton Live Stock Market.
Mr D. Thomas (late of Matson Cox and C 0.,) reports upon the live stock market for the Ashburton district, for the week ending June 12th, as follows :—On Tuesday, at the Ashburton Yards, I held my usual weekly sale of sheep, cattle, and pigs. There was a total entry for the day of 7600 sheep, 26 head of cattle, and 2 pigs, of which I sold 3546 sheep, and 7 head of cattle. The attendance of buyers was quite up to the average, but bidding was rather slack, and several lines were passed in unsold. I am glad to notice that a better demand is springing up for good lines of crossbred and merino owes, which have been somewhat neglected for some time past. The following were the prices realised:—For medium fat crossbred ewes, 8s 9d to 9s ; merino ewes, 4s 8i to 5s 6d ; boilers, 2s to 2s 6d. I also sold privately, 3000 2-tooth crossbred ewes and wethers, and 1000 merino ewes in lamb, at satisfactory prices. In cattle a very poor market, with prices rather below last sale.
