Mr Monro, Commissioner of Police, was hooted at the Hyde Park meeting. •The Chairman read a letter from Cardinal Manning saying if the principle proposed by. the Government of compensating publicans were, adopted it would spread throughout the Empire, and injure "the.cause of temperance in the; colonies.; 'Sir W. Lawson, Mr W. S. Cairie, and Mr Burns were among the speakers. Mr Gustafson dilated on the failure of compensation in Geelong. The resolutions against the payment of compensation were carried .unanimously at twelve platforms. r
