. A subscription list in aid of the proposed school for the blind has been opened at Cambridge, to supplement that started in Auckland.

•The reported discovery of the Orpheus wreck at Manukau ■ Heads has proved to be a hoax. The Hinemoa arrived at Onehunga wharf to-day, bringing a plank of teak wood 12in by- sin and about 6ft long, which Captain Fairchild declared was all of the hull of the Orpheus that could be seen, and which had been on the beach twenty-seven years ago.

■ Gisborne, May 31. The District Land Registrar, under authority from the Commissioner, sued two perpetual lease settlers for possession and forfeiture of land,- and overdue rent. The Court held that the proper person to sue for rent is the " Commissioner on behalf of Her Majesty." Judgment was given for possession and forfeiture. Wellington, May 31.

A supplementary; " Gazette " to-day contains the new scale of fares, rates and charges on the New Zealand Railways, to come into force on July Ist.
