The Orangemen of Ashburton held * social last night in their Hall, Burnett street, which was well attended, quite 150 people being present, among whom were a large number of members, with their wives, daughters, and sweethearts, from the country. Among other ladies present were four from No. 1 Female Orange Lodge, Christchurch, viz. — Mcsdames Sloan and W. Patterson, and Misses Haskctb and Gourley, and there were also among the visitors-two Australian members on tour. The hall presented a charming appearance; the decorations which were very beautiful, being the handiwork of Bro. H. Padgett, who supplied and fixed the flowers and evergreens, .and hung the flagsand banners. Prominent among the latter, was the handsome banner presented to the Lodge by Bro R. 'Mclntyre, which we were glad to notice is' kept in fine condition by the caretaker of the hall. The walls also bore flags of several meanings, but tho chief were the Union Jack, and the " Stars and Stripes." Refreshments were supplied in abundance by Mesdames W. Brown, R. Mclntyro, W. Huston (Newlands), S. Brown, and J.*M. Hampton, while Mr A. W. Randall provided a copious supply of nonalcoholic drinks. Dancing to the music of Brooks' band was carried on till an early hour, and the programme was agreeably varied by songs of the favorite "color" rendered in the usual hearty style by several of the brethren.
