SECOND EDITION NEWLANDS.
[from our own correspondent.]
At the last meeting of householders held here for the purpose of electing a School Committee, the following were elected:— Messrs Lill (Chairman), A. Hight, Lloyd, Aston, Megson, Parker, and Allen. Newlands is well up in all the technicali ties of electioneering, and so feels quite superior to those places the validity of whose recent elections has been questioned. THE ROAD BOARD ELECTION. After several attempts to elect a member to fill the extraordinary vacancy on the Wakanui Road Board, No. 3 Ward, a member has at last been returned. On the first occasion no one was nominated ; on the second, the nomination was forwarded to the Board office in Ashburton, but arrived too long after the specified hour to be received; on the third, and successful occasion, every step in this apparently momentous undertaking was carried out with all due consideration to legal details, with the result that Mr Q. W. Leadley was returned unopposed. BAND OF HOPE. The second meeting of the Band of Hope was held on Tuesday the 6th. inst., in the schoolroom. The youth and hope of the district gave several readings, recitations and dialogues, all of which contributed to pass a very pleasant evening. THE SEASON. Ploughing is being proceeded with on most, of the farms, and it is to be hoped that the crops will prove more remunerative this year than they did last, for none seem to have built up a large enough fortune with the proceeds of last harvest, bo retire and spend their remaining days in opulence and ease. i
