New Zealand Hemp.
The "New Zealand Times' " Palmerston correspondent, writing under dale May Bth, says :—" Messrs Gledhill and Co., flaxmillers, inform me that, according to London advices under date of 24th February, now received through their Wellington agents, they are informed' that their shipment per Tongariro "was of good bright color, and well dressed, although a little ' lowy ' at the emit,, and that with the exception of this defect the fibre was all that could be desired." The report' goes on to ,say, " We trust price yesterday (February 23) received for this parcel will induce your clients to ship hemp of this description in, largo quantities." The price realised for this sample as per the accompanying account sales, I was £31 6s per ton. In another lotter of even date the same correspondent says, " they can always guarantee £4 to £5 above the average quoted prices for shipment of hemp of like quality." This is of great public interest, showing, as it does, that at a comparative recent date, and j after the sudden fall in price, which ! created such a panic throughout the district, fibre of the quality shipped by Messrs Gledhill and Co. has still been ;able to command a good payable price.
