EARLY CLOSING.

Last night a meeting of shopkeepers' assistants wa,s held in the Orange Hall. About fifty were present, and Mr H. H. Stephens was Chairman, It was resolved to form an Early Closing Association in Ashburton, on the lines of a similar Association recently formed in Christchurch.

Correspondence was read from the Christchurch Early Closing Association covering a copy of that Association's rules. It was decided to adopt the Christchurch rules, with the exception that, as Wednesday was more suitable for Ashburton than Saturday, the former day was chosejn. The following officers were appointed : Presidentr-Rev. E. A, Scott; Vicepresidents—Messrs It. W. Jenkins, H. H. Stephens, and D. Amos, with a strong Committee of employees, and a Secretary and Treasurer from the same ranks.

The Secretary was instructed to supply officers and members with copies of the rules a.s adopted, and the subscription was fixed as follows :—Males, Is entrance and Is monthly ; females, Is entrance and 6d monthly.
