NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITION.
A meeting of the Local Committee and subscribers to the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition was held last night at the Borough Council Chambers. His Worship the Mayor presided, and there was a small attendance. The Chairman expressed his disappointmeut at the extreme want of interest shown m the Exhibition, this being the fourth meeting at which the attendance had been so small that the consideration •of matters calling for immediate attention had been postponed. During the conversation which ensued the opinion w»s generally expressed that the subscriptions already received or promised were such as to justify the confidence that the amount necessary to make a creditable display would be made up, many of those who are most interested m the progress of this district not having yet subscribed. The exhibits which had already been secured were enumerated, and it was decided to invite exhibits from all parts ot the County, whether products, manufactured articles, specimens of minerals, or any object of interest, to be forwarded to the Chairman's stores, or particulars forwarded to the Secretary. Exhibits already arranged for to be forwarded at once, so that arrangements for packing and displaying, and the preparation of the catalogue may be proceeded with, Meantime the subscription list to be brought under general notice. A suggestion that the collection should be exhibited m Ashburton before being sent to Dunedin was considered, and generally approved, and a sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, and Messrs R. Friedlandcr, R. W. Jenkins, 11. Zander, and D. H. Brown with power to add to their cumber, was appointed to see what arrangements j:ould be made, with power to act. The meeting then adjourned to Wednesday evening, September 18, when final conclusions will be come to, and it is hoped there will be a full attendance.
