News has been received here from the New Hebrides to the effect that a deputation of traders waited on the Governor of the French colony of New Caledonia and presented a petition asking that France should annex the group. The petition was signed by forty-two Englishmen, and fourteen of various nationalities except French. The Governor m replying to the deputation was guarded m his utterances, but said that the petition would receive the utmost consideration. Leavatt, a director of the Nickel Company, who is a visitor to the New Hebrides informed the natives that France would shortly annex Franceville, an important harbor m the group.
