VICTORIA.

Melbourmi, Angask It. la the House of Assembly Mr McLean has given notice of motion that as the farmers are entitled to a larger measure of protection, it is desirable to impose a uniform duty of $s per cental on all grain and pulse, and also to increase the stock tax. Mr Gillies, the Premier, accepted the motion as one of want of confidence, and the House adjourned until Tuesday, when the discussion will be taken. j The fishermen have asked the" Government to impose an all round duty of 2d per lb on imported fish, as they allege that the local industry is hampered by the importation of frozen fish from New Zealand. Mr J. B. Patterson, Commissioner of Customs, opposed placing a duty on food, but would consider the advisableness of a duty on smoked and salt fish, but fresh fish would be available to the public at a reasonable price. Sir W. Robinson has declined the Governorship of Mauritius on the score of ill health. Another appointment has been given him, but the localityhas not been made known.
