A desperate affray took place m MacLeay street at an early hour this morning between a police constable and a burglar, during which the for/ncr was shot. It appears that about 3 o'clock this morning Constable Sutherland, a native of New Zealand, who was on duty m MacLeay street saw a burglar making off from a house which he had successfully entered. On the police* man attempting to arrest him a severe struggle took place. At last the burglar, whose name is Morrison, seeing that he was being worsted, drew a revolver and shot Constable Sutherland m tbe groin. The wound caused the latter to let go his man, but before doing so he struck the burglar a terrific blow on the head with his baton. Morrison then made off, but was captured later m "the day. Constable Sutherland died about three hours after being shot.
