Wellington, May 8 A gentleman .In Wellington, who was for many years oonnooted with the Police Department, luforms the "Post" that smuggling Is carried on to such an extent that tbe colony is losing revenue at the rate of £250,000 per annum, and exp-esiea the opinion that Inoreased vigilance on the part of the Ons'oma authorities would prevent a good deal of this Illicit trade. The Informant mentions a case whare a oertain tradesman In Auckland was reoently offered an opportunity of poreffasiug a ton of tobacco at Is per pound, landed from a whaling vessel on a part of the ooast which is not frequently visited by human beings.
