NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY.

At the opening of the exhibition of paintings of the Royal Academy to-day Lord Salisbury announced that an anonymous donor had offered to erect a new National Portrait Gallery on a site offered by the Government near Trafalgar Square, where the former institution stood. It is rumored that the Right Hon. W. H. Smith is tbe donor.
