'Received April 12, 12 44 p m.) London, April 11. Thee hundred leading City men banquetted the Right Hon W. H. Smith, Government leader of the House of Commons, last night-. Replying to the toast of his health Mr Smith said he was confident those who desired the maintenance of the union of the Empire would be triumphant if they had the support of the merchants, bankers and manufacturers. He declared the obstructionists were trying to exhaust the physical strength of Ministers. Mr Balfour taunted the leaders of the Opposition with their impotence m controlling their followers below the : gangway.
