It is feared that great loss of life will be reoorded when fuller Infor matlon comes to hand. The village swept into the sea was that of Papetol, the houses being carried bodily away on the stormy watera of the ooean along with tbe inhabitant!, men, women and children, In one helpless mass. At Maoris the flood oaused great loss, the place having been overwhelmed by a terrible avalanche whioh descended from the hills. It is estimated that tbe loss sustained by the unfortunate Inhabitants of Papetot alone exoeeds 30,000 f ranoa, and a special appeal is made for contributions on their behalf. The mail schooner City of Papeete had a narrow escape during the hurricane. She arrived from San Franoisoo just as the storm was rising, and was forced to proceed to sea and remain there for eight days until the gale abated.
