At a banquet to-night, at which Lord Onslow, the new Governor of New Zealand, was entertained, Lord Knutsford I presided, and m proposing the toast of the guest was imperative that the responsibility of selecting all Governors for the colonies should rest with the Imperial Government, though iii was their duty to select the best possible gentleman. Lord Onslow, m reply, expressed sympathy with the colonies, and he hoped to promote closer union between the colonies and the Home country. The Marquis of Lome, who also addressed the assemblage, contended that the days of Downing street dictation were at an end.
