A private letter reoelved here state's that on the arrival of the Wainui at Apia the German Consul visited &fat*afa and proposed that if he would sign a p»par giving Germany the control of Samoa they would reooenlse him as king. Mataafa refused to sign anything with consulting the AmarlcaD and English Consuls, and there* upon the German proclamation was leaned. The Germans fired on two natives In Apia on the 23rd, but missed them. H.M.S Calliope is expected dally. It Is hoped that the High Oommltsloner will arrive by her.
