Copies of sessional returns just to hand furnish some interesting informs tion with respect to the progress of settlement m the colony, and indicate the operation of the choice of tenure afforded to settlers by the Land Act Amendment Act. The first of those to which we propose to refer is a Return to the order of the House of Representatives upon the motion of Mr Turnbull, showing the land disposed of under the ■ various systems for the six months ending the 31st March last. This shows the following results :— Areas Disposed op for Cash. Auckland 2672 acres, No. of selectors 117 ; Taranaki 303 acres, 2 selectors ; Hawke's Bay 3565 acres, 16 selectors ; Wellington 1557 acres, 7 selectors ; Nelson 1078 acres, 12 selectors ; Marlborough 798 acres, 7 selectors ; Canterbury 881 acres, 19 selectors ; Otago 1383 acres, 68 selectors ; Southland 188 acres, 11 selectors ; Westland 70 acres, 2 selectors, being a gross total of 11,990 acres purchased for cash by 261 persons — being an average of 46 acres per purchaser. Under the regulations relating to ordinary Pastoral Buns. There were taken up m Auckland 14,392,acre5, by 2 selectors j m Hawke's Bay 21,588 acres, by 2 selectors ; m Nelson 7468 acres, by 6 selectors ; m Marlborough 1180 acres, by 5 selectors ; m Canterbury 56,904 acres, by 9 selectors ; m Otago 239,901 acres, by 25 selectors ; m Southland 7375 acres, by 1 selector; and m Westland 57,000 acres, by 5 selectors — being a total acreage of 405,808 acres let as pastoral runs to 55 persons, being an average area of 7378 acres per run. Under the regulations relating to Small Grazing Runs. There were taken up m Hawke's Bay 28,631 acres, by 9 selectors ; m Wellington 14,409 acres, by 13 selectors; m Canterbury 2758 acres, by I selector : and m Otago 90,844 acre 9, by 38 selectors — being a total of 186,642 acres taken up by 61 persons--. an average of 2240 acres per holding. In Village Settlements, Either for cash or on deferred payments, there were taken up m Auckland j2 acres, by 9 settlers ; m , Taranaki, 8 acres, by § settlers s in Hawke's Bay, 90 acres, by 26 settlers ; m Wellington, 67 acres, by 8 settlers ; m Canterbury, 5 acres, by 9 settlers ; m Otago, 21 acres, by 3 settlers ; and m Southland, $2 acres by 8 settlers ; showing a total of 285 acre* thus disposed of tp 72 persons, being an average area per holding of, as nearly as possible, 4 acres. To Special Settlement Associations, There were disposed of m Wellington 8.5,274 acres tp Associations numbering 346 persons, and m Village Homestead Special Settlements. There were allotted m Auckland 2199 acres to 47 persons ; m Hawke's Bay, 26 acres to one person ; m Wellington, 260 acres to 18 persons ; m Canterbury, 404 acres to 15 persons ; m Otago, 29 acres to 2 persons ; and m Southland, 21 acres to 3 persons ; the total acreage being thus 265, among 46 selectors ; being an average area per holding of 5| acres. Under Other Systems. The results shown are as follows :— Small Areas, Canterbury, 58 acres, 2 f electors; Agricultural Lease, Otago, 181 acres, 5 selectors. The above brings out the fact that settlement is proceeding much more satisfactorily m Wellington, Auckland and Otago than m Canterbury and "other parts of the colony, for, leaving out the figures relating to pastoral runs, it will be found that during the six months to which the return relates Wellington gained 438 new settlers, Aupkland §01 and Otago 204 ; while the figures for the other land district! stand as follows, vie :— Hawkes Bay, 72 ; Canterbury, 5.8 : Taranaki, 54 ; Southland, 51 ; Nelson, 44 ; Marlborough, 8 ; and Westland, 8. The "other return to which we call attention is one laid upon the table, with leave of the House, by the Minister for Lands, and relates to the Assisted Immigration of Farmers possessed of a small amount of capital of their own, from whioh it appears that under this system there have been brought to the colony 897 persons, (equal to 811^ statute adults), their nationalities being English 292, Scotch 93, Irish 12, towards whose passage money the colony has contributed a total of £3099 10s. This is evidently well- spent money, as the amount of capital brought into the colony by these assisted passengers is reported as reaching the very satisfactory total of £43,785.
