FRENCH DEFENCE EXPENDITURE.
Paris, November 12. In the Chamber of Deputies M. Freycinet, Minister of War, said that until there was a change m the general situation it was impossible to hope that the ordinary war expenditure could be reduced below five hundred and fifty millions of francs, and it might even be necessary to make special efforts to secure the better defence of the country. At present the ordinary war Budget was five hundred millions beyond what had already been spent. He explained that this statement was made m view of the necessity for taking precautionary steps to maintain peace, and was not to be construed into an indication of an aggressive intention on the part of the Government.
