The census returns, as taken in April, 1881, show the religions of the people of the colony (exclusive of Maoris) to ho as undernoted : Church of England ; Episcopalians (not otherwise defined), 200,816 ; Protestants (not otherwise defined), 2,517. Presbyterians: Church of Scotland, Free Church of Scotland, Free Presbyterians, Presbyterian Church of New Zealanl, Presbyterian Church of Olago and Southland, and Presbyterians otherwise defined, 113,038. Reformed Presbyter- . fans, 70. Methodists : Wesleyan Methodists, 39,544 ; Primitive Methodists. 4,643 ; United Methodist Free Churches—Free Methodists, United Methodists, 2,009; Bible Christians, 375 ; New Connexion .Methodists, 31; others, 55. Other Protestants: Baptists, 11,476; Congregational Independents, 6.699; Lutherans, 5,773 ; Unitarians, 489 ; Society of Friends, 232 Catholic Apostolic, 121 ; others, 6,083. Catholics : Roman Catholics, 68,349 ; undefined Catholics, 635 ; Greek Church, 65. Other Denominations: Latter Day Saints or Mormons, 271; Jens, 1,536; Mahometans, 7 ; Pagans, 4,936 ; others, 237. s No Denomination, 4,537 ; no religion, 13,978. Total of all creeds, 269,605 males and i 220,328 females.
