[per press association.] Drowned. Auckland, To-day. Alexander Wilkie, mate of the brigantine Eliza Mary, was drowned last night. He was escorting a drunken seaman aboard when both slipped from the plank connecting the vessel and the wharf. The seaman was picked up at once, but Wilkie’s body has not yet been recovered . Been Drinking. Masterton, To-day. A man named Ford fell off his horse last night, and was killed. He had been drinking. Suspicious. Dunedin, To-day. Phillip Waldmann, baker, in whose house the Queenstown fire broke out, was arrested by the police here and remanded to Queenstown for Monday next, bail being fixed in self in LI,OOO and two sureties of LSOO each. Ihe circumstances surrounding the fire are exceedingly suspicious. In a private unoccupied house belonging to Waldmann a quantity of inflammable material was found. His wife came to Dunedin last week, bringing a quantity of household goods with her.
