Wilful unbelievers scoff at Christianity, would make out that it is losing influence, ate., just as past generations of unbelievers did. Some will give the Bible a certain time to exist, and then modem enlightenment will be fatal to it. Voltaire did the same thing; according to him the Bible should now be unheard of, for his fixing of the date of its death is gone and the Bible is a hundred times more seen and read and believed all over the world than it was in his day. But of course it pleased him vastly to know for certain, and be far surer of what mett would do with it in the future than what they had done with it in the past, because he knew no one could contradict his forecast, and he would be dead before time made him a deceiver, as it assuredly has, and as it assuredly will all like him. It pleases men now to prophecy the same, and so the world rolls on, generation succeeding generation, each having its “ believers ” and “ unbelievers,” some day by day “making their election sure,” and some iday by day building up fortunes in money -or land. It is a remarkable world this of ours. Regarding it in a “spiritual” sense and in respect to the relations of man to his God, it is like a great long tunnel, which sin has caused to be quite /dark. Each generation, as it leaves infancy, enters the tunnel. Though a big tunnel, it is crowded with people all travelling one way in the pitchy darkness, and none of those ahead ever stop or turn back to tell those behind what it is like. But in many different places in the tunnel there are notices up describing the tunnel and its . dangers all along, but especially at the far end, where there is a terribly deep ravine, quite impassible save by one long thin plank. At these notices there are also large numbers of lanterns, and each -person is asked to take one to show him .the way. Many take there lanterns at different places, and at once see the descriptions of the notices as to the tunnel are correct in every particular, and so are sure of the truth as to the ravine and the single plank. But many others will not accept the lamps, but travel on in the dark, not two of them agreed as to what the end will be, and cannot understand what they are in the tunnel for, nor can they make out the tunnel itself, while they ridicule all idea of danger—naturally —for having no light, they cannot see if they want to. And thus the multitude pass on, some with lights and sime without. Those with lights, finding the descriptions wonderfully accurate, and the instructions marvellously adapted to meet , the dangers described, follow the instructions more and more closely as they g on, till gradually they find themselves taking a seemingly more difficult track than those without the lights ; and so it is more difficult in itself, but having the lights, the track is more easy than the -other one is for those without lights, and which other track the latter have taken because it was easier travelling apparently. At last is reached, -'And those with lights from their rough ground see the plank right in front of them, and pass over boldly and safely to the consummation of the highest desire of man ; while those without lights, boldly indifferent because they are in darkness, and cannot possibly see danger, step suddenly down into everlasting darkness and trouble. The notices of description and instruction are the Bible and kindred human products thereof, the lights are Christ, the single plank is the blood of, " Christ, which has carried believers over ffrom death unto life. But this is all foolishness to those that perish, to those who will not accept salvation. But to those that are being saved it is the power of God.
