The gas in the office was suddenly turned off, and before it could be re-lighted a registered bank safe, containing diamonds and other valuables, worth LBo,ooo, was stolen. The robber has not yet been discovered. At Anchor. Arrived—Ship Sarah Scott, from Lyttelton, sailed August 2 ; Assel, from the Bluff, August 4. German Parliament. Berlin, Nov. 17. The Imperial Parliament was opened to-day. The speech from the throne was read by Prince Bismarck, in the absence of the Emperor. His Majesty’s address stated that the peace of the Empire was surer now than it had been at any time during the last decade. It announced that the present economic fiscal policy of the country would be firmly adhered to, and concluded by stating that a scheme of insurance for workman would be instituted with a view to improve the latter’s welfare, and counteract the growth of Socialism in the Empire.

A serious fire occurred to-day at Messrs Kingston’s drapery warehouse, in George street. The insurance on the stock and buildings include Li,ooo in New Zealand offices. Suffocated. Three workmen were suffocated today by fumes from vinegar vats at Monk’s works. Shipping. Arrived, yesterday evening—Hero, s.s., from Auckland. Commercial.
