I HAVE heard persons who ought: to know remark that ‘ ‘ Rome was 'not built in a day,” nor, for that matter, was Ashburton, notwithstanding . ‘that the latter has been called a “jumped-up town. ” I don’t believe the site of Ashburton will revert to a sheep-walk again quite so soon as some people imagine, and it’s being jumped upon in this way won’t hinder its advancement in the least. In j proof that this is my way of thinking, I point to the business I am now engaged in building up, which, thanks to the public of Ashburton and surrounding districts, bids fair to be of a substantial character.
