The Government dam was carried away on Thursday night, taking with it Gregory and Horner’s dam, also everything below it, and very nearly causing loss of life. The damage done is considerable, and causes nearly a total cessation of mining in the district. More Mystery. Wanganui, To-day. A fire broke out in the Post Office last night, between II and 12 o’clock. The fireoriginatedin a store-room, which,Wong with the roof of the office, is much damaged. The cause of the fire is unknown, and the damage estimated at LIOO. The telegraph instruments and mails are uninjured. Poor Quirk. Timaru, To-day.
At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, Michael Quirk was charged with attempting suicide in the Park by stabbing himself. The man was only discharged from tho Hospital this morning, and was immediately arrested by Detective Kirby, and committed for trial; but was liberated on his own recognisances of LSO. The Burning Continues. Dunedin, To-day. The Grange store, Forth street, was burned down yesterday. The building was insured in the Transatlantic for L4OO, and the stock and furniture in the same office for L 350. Mr Thompson, the owner, estimates his loss at L 550 above insurance. At Last. The Vincent County has reached the end of its financial tether. The Bank has refused further advances, and requested a reduction of the overdraft. Satisfactory. The Garrick Club had a crowded house in aid of the Tararua fund. A Trio. There were three insolvencies this week. The principal one was John Morrison Innes, Mosgiel, storekeeper; debts, L 1,935 ; assets, L 1,399.
