ASHBURTON V- GERALDINE. This match took place to-day, on the Domain ground. The visiting team, owing to the bad state of the weather, were three men short, but this was remedied in the shape of substitutes. The Ashburton team were the first to go to the wickets, play commencing shortly after twelve o’clock. • Hodder and A. Fooks were the first to handle the willow, to the trundling of Pierpoint and Murray, but the partnership was of short duration, A. Fooks being run out, after scoring a single. Hoskins was deputed to fill the vacancy, but was quickly disposed of by a shooter from Pierpoint. M‘Laren, who succeeded him, only added three to the total, when he was caught out by the Geraldine captain, off the bowling of Murray., Andrews joined issue with Hodder, and. a most determined stand was effected, notwithstanding the excellence of the bowling—Pierpoint sending down nine succeeding maiden overs.Following this, however, the batsmen got set, and made a stay at the wickets lasting nearly three hours before a separation was effected by one of Murray’s, which removed Hodder’s bails, the score standing at 90 ; of which number the retiring batsman had contributed 45. Barker was immediately after run out. Giffkins succeeded him, but Andrews was then disposed of by one of Murray’s, having made 35.. The tail end figured most ingloriously, the innings closing for 95.
