An ordinary meeting of this Board was held this morning. members present. There were present—Messrs H. Friedlander (chairman), Mayo, Brown, and Winter. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence read included the following : From the Ashburton Borough Council, re the appointment of an Inspector of Nuisances, and resolution passed on that matter by this Council. Resolved — “ That the letter be acknowledged, and the Council be requested to state the amount this Board will have to contribute. ”

Circular from the Manawatu County Council. —Ordered to be laid on the table, and receipt of same acknowledged. From E. Coutts and other petitioners, informing the Board that a road near the East Town Bolt, and which the Board had previously refused to shingle in consequence of its not having been dedicated to the Council, had been so dedicated, and plana lodged by Messrs Fooks and Son, and requesting the Board to shingle same previous to winter setting in.—The application was complied with. From James Walsh and others, requesting the Board to lower the terrace near Corbet's to an extent of not less than two feet.—lt was resolved—That the Surveyor, in conjunction with Mr Brown, have power to get this work done." From Ashburton County Council re' appointment of Registrar of dogs in the Wakanui Road Board district.

From the trustee in Quigley’s estate, requesting the payment of money due to Quigley by the Board to Messrs Hodder and Co.—Application granted. From Ashburton County Council, offering to defray half the expenses of the completion of a rate roll for the ensuing ydar. —Resolved that a copy be prepared, and a claim of L3O preferred against the Council.

From manager of Pries 00., drawing attention of the Board to appointment of that journal as Gazette for the Provincial District of Canterbury. KATE FOB ENSUING YEAR. In the matter of striking a rate for the ensuing twelve months, the following resolution was moved by the Chairman, and seconded by Mr Mayo, viz—‘‘That this Board intends striking a rate of uiie shilling in the £, for the year ending

March 31st, 1882, on the 31st day of, April next, and that the rate will be payable in ofte. sum, on the 28th day of April next, and that the rate book is now open for inspection at the Road Boards offices, Moore street, Ashhjirton. ’’—Carried.

INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION GRANT. It was resolved that this Board vote the sum of LBO towards the defraying *of the expenses of the Industrial Exhibition. INSPECTOR’OF NUISANCES. The report of the Inspector of Nuisances for the month terminating previous to the last meeting of the Board, and which fell through owing to there being no quorum, was read and accepted. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The Engineer reported as follows : I. Buckley’s Road : The contract for metalling this road has been completed.—2. Boundary Road : —The contractor for metalling part of this road has reported the work is finished. - With regard to this contract, arrangements were made whereby the side drains of the road, where the metal had been taken out, were filled in at 5s per chain, including both sides, and such metalling done as would barely exceed the amount of the original contract.—3.- Wakanui Township Road Formation : On account of the wet weather lately making the road bad for making, the contractor had not started to finish this work last Tuesday. It will require seven or eight days to finish. The time far extension has expired.—4. Maintenance of Roads: The contractor has been at work on roads in the district requiring attention. —5. Milton Road : We have had the culverts on this roadrepaired, and have also had a culvert,put in on Trevor’s road. —6. Valuation LiSt : The valuation list of ' the Wakamti district for 1881 has been passed and signed by the judge. The Clerk of the County Council requested a copy of the list, we therefore had one made out. —7; Footpaths : We would suggest to the Board the 1 advisablertcss of determining the footpaths on the Beach road in accordance with the Act. They are at present being spoilt by persons continually riding, etc., along them, which is also a,source of danger to the public.—B. Wc have had a bridge put on the Chertsey road where the plains water race crosses. The place was getting dangerous for traffic. It was resolved —“ That the Beach road and Wakanui..road, from Town Belt to Trevor’s road, bo a carriage way for 46ft. in the centre of the roadway, and that 10ft. on each side of the road be a footpath,' in accordance with the Public Works Act.”

Mr Brown moved —“ That Wilson’s road be formed to the full width. ” This was not seconded, and consequently foil through. The Engineers’ action in re Rakaia Boundary Road was approved of. ACCOUNTS.

Accounts to the amount of L 124 8s were passed for payment, and the Chairman authorised to draw a olieque for payment of the judgment in Leadley’s compensation case.


The Board then adjourned to the 21s' inst., on which date a special meeting wil be held ro rates.
