A WHALER ASHORE.
(By Telegraph.) Auckland, To-day. The American whaling barque Janus, which went ashore at Awanui Heads, is reported to be a total wreck. She was twelve months out from New Bedford, with 300 barrels of oil. The vessel is lying on her beam ends, with six feet of water in her hold at low water. The masts are cut away, and the crew are discharging the cargo. The whale oil cannot be got out. Nothing is insured.
