Mysterious Affair in Dunedin.

[BY TELEGRAPH.] Dunedin, To-day. A strange affair is being inquired into by the police. This morning, in the southern recreation ground, were found a woman’s ‘ dress, brooch, earrings, and some letters, signed “ Mary Prescott,” addressed to her family, in which the writer says, that in consequence of friends having been false to her, she intended doing away with herself. The things wei’e found alongside the water’s edge, and have since been identified as belonging to a young woman, Mary Prescott, aged 20, who recently quarrelled with her lover, and threatened to commit suicide. The police are investigating the matter.
