Wellington 2 April 1868 My dear McLean - As you are aware Gisborne and I bought from Whitmore on September last the Native lease of a run at Pakuitutu - between the Mohaka and Ripiu rivers - We were assured at the time that it was not included in the confiscated block - The run in question is only 7600 acres and the native owners are Paul Hapi and Tareha whose loyalty I believe is unquestioned - We have recently found out that the run is within the boundaries of the confiscated land - just on the outer boundary I believe, - and perhaps inadvertently included. Would you be kind enough to tell us what is likely to be done about the land with the loyal natives, and what we should do in the matter in order that we may get the land through the Native Lands Court - We have paid the cost of survey (above £100) having ordered the survey before we were aware of the land being included in the limits of confiscation. As you know all the circumstances of our purchase, and as practically the course taken in respect of the confiscated block, rests with you, I am sure you will excuse me troubling you in this matter which is of great importance to Gisborne and myself - Yours faithfully J. Holt.
