Roto Aira, Taupo Novr. 10th, 1867 Dear Sir, We have arrived thus far all right. The Natives on the whole have been very civil. Mr.Cox will get arun. And I believe the native would lease all their land with a little management. Something ought be done at once to advance that object but what I wished particular to mention was the necessity of at once, opening a dray communication with this district from Napier, and the only way I can see is by the back of Puketitiri, so as to avoid Hukanui and then by the Ripia valley. The Natives here would take the contract at a low rate. I hope to be back, in ten days or so. Will be go enough to send over the enclosed note. I remain, Yours truly, S. Locke His Honor D.McLean Napier P. S. The Natives here wish me to remind you about some promise of the Governors that you would send a Millwright to repair their Mill at Tukano.
