To:- D. McLean Wellington. September 16th. 1868. Could not a strong Company of the 18th. be sent from Wellington or elsewhere to Wairoa with instructions to build small Redoubt. Would restore confidence to European and natives over the Province, and retain very many wavering ones from joining the enemy It requires some such action to save the Province. This would meet with strong support. No instructions yet forwarded to Grindell to pay my salary and forage from 1st. July, also forage due from 1st. April 1866. (Signed) Hamlin.
