. Turanganui December 10th. 1868. My dear Sir, I enclose a letter which Paraone Hinaki has just asked me to send for him. Mr. Richmond was having some korero yesterday, about the Land Question in this place; and the people - some of them, at all events - would rather manage the business through you, and have it talked over and discussed. I am very sorry that no further active steps are going to be taken here just now. I think a great deal might be done , which cannot so easily be done at any other time; and by God's blessing, an end might be put to all disturbance on this part of the Coast. The Hau Haus have their potatoes now just ready to take up. These would come in for our people, and relieve the transport service very materially; and the destruction of all that our people might not require, would cripple them as it did three years ago. Westrup quite agrees with me in this; and so, I think, does Frazer; who, from what he said yesterday, appears to be quite ready to go at them at once. As matters are, there is no security all along the Coast, from this to Napier; and if the vagabonds are left alone, they will form a nucleus for any blood-thirsty fellows from other parts. By waiting their opportunity, they may come down when and where they are least expected. There seems to be reason to think that Kooti has been wounded. It was reported yesterday that Te Waru was among the slain, but we cannot be sure of this. If it had been so, I think we should have heard it before.
