Whangarei, November 16, 1857. My dear Sir, My return from Mangapai was welcomed by your kind and valuable letter which seems from its date to have been waiting for me a long time. I have just finished plotting my work in time for the Petrel, which is to sail early tomorrow morning. During the last five days I have plotted and finished five plans, and kept the men at workin the field which I think is satisfactory work. Since my return to this district I have scarsely had one moment to call my own, I have given the Government the whole of my time, and if they are not satisfied I think they ought to be, I have sent you my field plotting of the Mangapai block, it is not intended for the use of the Provincial Government, I shall prepare a plan on a large scale when I return to town. I hope to finish the survey of two blocks adjoining Sir Osborne Gibbe's land in about ten days when I shall have the pleasure of sending you a plan. I lay down my work on paper as I go along so that I am satisfied as to the accuracy of the work as I go along, and when the survey is finished, the rough field plotting is available for the use of the Government. I regret much that my Uncle has not replied to any of your letters, I cannot account for his having not done so. No doubt he has some good reason to give; he cannot have forgotten you. I am indeed glad you approve of my choice for a wife. You ask me when I am going to get Married, I think, in about six or eight months will be a good time, but I suppose I must consult convenience. My duties may prevent its taking place for a long time. I should like your opinion on the subject? as you know better how I shall be situated than I do myself.
