Napier 29th. July 1872. Dear Sir, With reference to Reinga land. A week previous to your last visit to P. Bay Te Rakiroa came down on errand for Raniera Kawhia I told him to return to Mataahu lest you saw him and became angry with me. He promised to do so and I thought had gone. After you had left Capt. Read told me you had given consent to his Rakiroa's pointing out boundaries. Rakiroa afterwards came to inquire particulars saying he did not like the work of his pakeha and was also frightened of Ropata. Rakiroa was anxious to obtain from me some authority to deter his going not having sufficient courage to act alone. I told him to do as he liked I would not interfere. The man Dunahoo came to get me to make it all right with Ropata and that I should find a letter someday with something in it if all went well. To him I also returned the same answer. The survey party started out but was intercepted at Big River but they managed to push on by giving your name as the authority for the survey. Ropata Whakapuhia and others came to me very indignant with yourself and Ropata. I explained to them the particulars of your consent. They then told me they had written to Wairoa telling them to drive surveyors back. I saw Capt. Read and said there was likely to be some trouble over the affair and that I did not think you would have given your consent had you known particulars; he expressed regret saying he did not want to get into trouble with you but that if survey was stopped he would loose money by it. I told him I would not interfere as I had not committed myself with either party and would only interfere in extremity. I don't know what has occurred since I left. I am greatly inconvenienced by attendance here in Napier having much work undone I have to visit Waikare before I can get up the coast. I am Dear Sir, Yours most faithfully, T.W. Porter. Capt.
