January 3rd, 1869 My dear Richmond, I did all I could in the morning to get the Ahuriri returned at once with the articles you wrote for. It was however found impossible to do so, a heavy sea was running and she could not get out nor could boats communicate. I am delighted to hear of the prospect of success at Ngatapa and trust this will prove to be Kooti's final death blow, the position must be a strong one and the enemy must have great confidence in it by holding out so long as they have done. I telegraphed to Haultain but am sorry to find the wire is down; Dr.Brown takes the chloroform the biscuit is shipped and the ammunition, I trust the boat will get away at 10 tonight. The Wairoa expedition has returned from the Puketapu which appears to have been evacuated two months ago, they found large crops of potatoes, took a few prisoners and Haultain wishes to send St. Kilda for them which will be done whenever she can land boats there. There is very little news from the South, there may be letters for you in the Wellington expected tonight --
