Napier Feby. 26th /65 Dear Sir I am very sorry indeed to hear that you are detained at Wellington through your illness - I was in hopes that the change would have done you good, which I trust it still will soon do - I wrote a letter to you the other day explaining as far as I yet know everything connected with the pai marire affair in this province, which letter I addressed to you at Otago beleiving you to be there - In that letter I stated that there are a lot of people from Petene Waikato and other places at the Hauke preaching their religion and that a quantity of Hapuku's people and also pakipaki people had joined - and that there are more expected from Waikato soon - I also said that there was to be a meeting either at pakowhai or Pawhakamu on the 15th of March where the Native would consider as to what should be done in the present crisis. I believe that Tareha, Renata and Karaitiana will endeavour to get rid of the people not for any love to us but so as to keep us as it were under an obligation to them so that they may keep independent of us as Mr. Cooper does not wish me appearently to do any thing in the affair I mean to be off to night or in the morning but I shall bring down Ihaka and one or two others if I see a necessity for it on my own responsibility for I believe this to be a very delicate question to handle and ought to be conducted with great caution - Messres. Gollan, Russell and others wish me to stop here but I must go north - and since I have told Mr. Gollan my plan of bringing down Ihaka etc. he approves of my going. I can meet the Hapuku with Ihaka by me. I will write again soon - Hoping that this will find you much better - I remain Dear Sir Your Obt. Servt. S. Locke D. McLean Esqre. Wellington
