Brackenfield. Kowai. Canterbury. May 18, 1863. My dear McLean, You will see in a Canterbury Press which I will send you, a letter of mine in defence of Governor Browne and in fact of you and Parris Whitaker and self against a most shameful accusation to the effect that Browne or you had promised the natives to withdraw the troops from Waitara and broken his word. Now I want you to read my letter and to write to me what you think of it - you might also write me a short line with authority to publish it if I think advisable you will see both attack and reply in my letter. I take this opportunity to introduce to you Capt. Allen an officer in the Army who has come only with introductions to me from Sir C. Clifford and others, he had business in your province about some affairs I think, of his brother he has just arrived and must be off in half an hour to catoh the mail - so I must conclude but I am glad to be able once more to subscribe myself. Yours very faithfylly, Fred. A. Weld,
