Waipawa June 6th 1863 Mr. Russell is more easy. To Donald McLean Esqre. Dear Sir, I called on Mr. Tanner and after explaining to him that it would be better that he should not do anything further in respect to the Raukawa run for the present, I delivered the letter as he appeared to be obstinate in the matter. It appears that he has had an outstation built by the Natives and is quite prepared to drive his sheep there. He intends going to Town on Tuesday the 9th and wishes me to go with him as far as Poukawa but I dont think that I can s pare the time. I also learnt from him that some of the Natives wish to have a meeting in this neighbourhood to talk over matters, but I told him that such a thing could not be done at present on the contrary that if it was found necessary it would be much better for a few of the leading runholders to meet and consider the question I did not inform him that such a thing had already been contemplated on. It appeared at once to me that they (the Natives) were moving their pawns out as fellers with the intent to hear all they could and say nothing and when Karaitiana returned to deny every thing for of course there would be no Chief of note present such a step might answer after his return. I remain Yours truly Saml. Locke
