Turanganui November 10th. 1868 Dear Sir, I wrote you a few hurried lines this morning, but I knew very little then of what had actually taken place here. The Hau Haus - probably the escaped prisoners - made a descent upon this place last night, or rather between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning; and massacred at least 27 of the European inhabitants of this district, including Major Biggs, Mr. Wilson, Lieut. Walsh, with their wives and families. There are also about 20 natives killed - perhaps more. In fact the marauders seem to have spared no one they fell in with. Capt. Westrup and all the Europeans from the other side of the Bay have fled to Wairoa, by the Coast road. Some of the women and children from this place are going away either in the ''Tawera'' or the ''Success''. We have a few of Henare Potae's men here; and a small number of Europeans, and that is all. You see, therefore, that we are in a rather defenceless position; and you will know best what can be done to relieve us. You will be able, also, to communicate with the Wairoa, and organise any expedition from that side, which may appear likely to be of advantage in the present crisis. Capt. Read is going, and will give you all particulars. I remain Yours truly (Signed) W.L. Williams. To:- D. McLean Esq.
