Melbourne Kaikora. December 6th. 1868 My dear McLean, I am very glad to learn from your note the judicious steps you have taken, with respect to arms and ammunition. What is wanted is that men should be accustomed to the use of their weapons; which will give them confidence, and make them useful, if an emergency should arise. I am also glad to find a memorial has been prepared to the Governor, on the subject of Whitmore's appointment. I shall go over to Waipawa to sign it, as I think it necessary in the present state of the Province, that everything should be done to strengthen your hands; and I look upon Whitmore's appointment as one of the greatest misfortunes that could befall us. Yours very truly (Signed) Robt. Stokes. To:- D. McLean Esq.
