Napier Jany. 14, 1869 My dear Mr. McLean I have done an act of ''pokanoa'' and sent a telegram to Richmond the rough copy of which I enclose. I send also a copy of Mr. Richmonds reply. One chief point which presents itself to me is what Tareha said to you on Tuesday, viz that Paerau has now unmistakeably joined the Hauhaus, and his feeling (Tarehas) that it is necessary-that the Hauhaus should be put down with a high hand, that is those in Ruatahuna. I Will send this particular to Richmond tomorrow, but if you have any thing more I shall be glad of it. The Govt. will be inclined to poohpooh all danger until we have some more murders at the outposts. The Taupo natives feel the danger very strongly. That corps of observation ought to be kept up if we pay for it out of our own pockets. Yours very faithfully W. Waiapu
